Our pre-vocational employment program assists students preparing to join the workforce through the completion of apprenticeships or on-the-job training programs.
Under the Gulf Communities Agreement, Century mine in the lower Gulf Region of Queensland provides training opportunities that can lead to meaningful employment for people of the local Traditional Owner groups and lower Gulf communities. MMG supports the trainees through the transition into traineeships and apprenticeships in the mining industry and the wider community.
The students, from the surrounding local communities of Century mine, complete TAFE modules, life skills programs, safety courses and other training over a 12-week period. Students that successfully complete the course are then offered an apprenticeship or traineeship at Century mine. Traineeships and apprenticeships are available in such areas as warehouse and logistics, laboratory, administration, accounting, surveying, IT, hospitality, mill operations, tyre fitting, diesel fitting, boiler making, electrics, auto-electrics, painting, carpentry, plumbing, fitting & turning and refrigeration mechanics.
To be eligible to participate in the program you need to belong to one of the local Native Title Groups - Waanyi, Gkuthaarn,Mingginda, Kukatj or have lived in one of the local communities for five years - Normanton, Karumba, Doomadgee, Burketown, or Mornington Island.
