[Monash University, Melbourne:]

Monash University has formalised its partnerships with MMG Limited (MMG) and Newcrest Mining Limited today with the signing of philanthropic gifts to support the establishment of the Division of Mining and Resources Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering.

Monash University's Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Tam Sridhar said the partnership recognised the University’s continuing commitment to provide industry-relevant courses.

“Industry came to Monash asking us to establish a Mining Division to help resolve the significant national shortage of Mining Engineers,” Professor Sridhar said.

“After careful consideration we decided to establish a division that delivers mining education together with high quality research capabilities. In working with two of Australia’s largest companies in the resources sector, we have designed a modern course that will produce graduates who are industry-ready. This will allow the University to positively respond to the needs of industry both here in Australia and overseas. New staff have already been attracted to Monash from overseas.”

The new division will see Monash University become the only Victorian Group of Eight university to have an educational division in mining and resources engineering and provides a means for Victorian students and industry to participate more comprehensively in the mining boom.

The University earlier this year announced it would offer a Bachelor of Mining Engineering (Honours) in 2013.

The Honourable Michael O'Brien MP, Minister for Energy and Resources attended the signing and congratulated MMG, Newcrest and Monash University on the collaboration.

Newcrest Mining’s CEO Mr Greg Robinson said Newcrest Mining looked forward to continuing their support of the Division to develop the courses to address the needs of an industry which is very important to Australia.

“It is important that courses like the one on offer at Monash provide the industry with the calibre of multi-skilled engineer required in the mines of the future,” Mr Robinson said.

MMG’s CEO Mr Andrew Michelmore said their support for educational institutions such as Monash University was imperative to meet the needs of the mining industry and leverage their existing strengths both in an educational as well as research capacity.

“The mining industry is continuing to expand and it is pleasing to be part of Monash University’s positive response in setting up the Division to the research and future employment needs of the industry,” Mr Michelmore said.

MMG and Newcrest sign partnership agreement with Monash for the creation of a new mining engineering school.
