MMG Century Mine’s trucking update

This is an update on MMG Century’s trucking programs which are coming to an end for 2014. A flyer is also available for download and distribution. Your help in passing on information about Century’s trucking programs is much appreciated.

About Century’s trucking program

MMG Century is currently undertaking two separate trucking programs of metal concentrate:

  1. Between Century Mine at Lawn Hill and the Port of Karumba (and)
  2. Between Century Mine and the Port of Townsville.

Useful information

  • From 19 December, there will be increased trucking between Lawn Hill and Karumba (via Gregory, Burke & Wills Roadhouse & Normanton), with up to eleven (11) trucks in triple and quad formations being used daily. Half-height sealed containers will continue to be used.
  • The Karumba trucking program will pause from the afternoon of Tuesday 23 December and resume on the afternoon of Friday 26 December.
  • All trucks used in MMG Century trucking programs have GPS tracking and are equipped with satellite phones.
  • Concentrate on Century’s trucking programs is carried in sealed half-height containers.
  • The Townsville & Karumba trucking programs will both end on Wednesday 31 December 2014. Any containers transported after that date will be empty and returning to the point of hire.

Safety tips when sharing the road with heavy vehicles

  • Use caution if overtaking trucks and always drive to conditions. If in doubt, don’t overtake.
  • Never overtake in dust plumes, as oncoming vehicles will be obscured.
  • Trucks have right-of-way over smaller vehicles on single lane roads. When approaching a truck from the opposite direction, slow down and (if safe to do so) move to the left to give the truck room.
  • Use UHF Channel 40 to communicate with truck drivers if your vehicle is fitted with a two-way radio.

In an emergency, call 000 when in mobile range or 112 when out of mobile range. Do not hang up until told to do so by the operator.
