Century is currently in a transitionary period – examining all options to utilise MMG’s extensive infrastructure in the Gulf beyond 2015 while preparing for the end of open cut zinc production.
Following exhaustion of the Century Ore Reserve during 2015, MMG will close the Century open pit. This process is already underway, with rehabilitation progressively conducted on areas disturbed by open cut mining operations.
Century’s 2013 rehabilitation program included about $7 million of earthworks, technical studies and other activities to prepare for the eventual closure of the Century open pit.
The ultimate goal of Century’s rehabilitation program is to return the area to its pre-mining use – low intensity cattle grazing and native habitat.
