    Until recently, most host communities living around the Sepon mine did not have a reliable piped water supply. Water is now being provided in a sustainable way, using bore holes and a gravity fed water supply system run on solar power.

    The goal of the Houaykong Training Centre is to provide training in traditional handicraft production and livelihood skills to members of the mine’s host communities.

    In order to maximise benefits of the mine for local communities, many supplies and services for the mine are sourced from local business groups.

  • Mother and child health

    Sepon and the Macfarlane Burnet Institute, in cooperation with Vilabouly District’s Department of Health, are working to implement a mother and child health project.

  • Sepon development trust fund

    Vilabouly District is host to the Sepon mine. It is also one of the 47 poorest districts of the Lao PDR. The Sepon Development Trust Fund provides US$500,000 a year for Vilabouly District.

  • Village banking

    One of the key issues identified by local community members was the difficulty experienced in borrowing money to start new business ventures for agricultural activities. In response, GIZ (the German Development Agency) has been contracted to establish village banking in 70 communities throughout the district by end of 2012.

    Under the Village Development Funds initiative, community members work to determine their own needs and wants and are awarded grants to implement their ideas.
