Health and Hygiene
Protecting the health of our people is as vital as protecting their safety.
We proactively support the physical and mental wellbeing of our people and we work to minimise occupational health exposure risks.
We acknowledge that work at remote mining operations can be challenging and can impact mental health and wellbeing. Under our Mental Health Framework, we continue to implement culturally appropriate initiatives in our business.
We operate in countries where the prevalence of endemic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria are high. All our workplaces are required to maintain and implement risk-based Exposure Management Plans and we support programs to help eradicate and manage these diseases in our host communities.
Our Exposure Management Plans also address occupational exposure risks in our workplaces that include possible exposures to altitude, noise, lead and vibration; and carcinogenic substances such as respirable crystalline silica, diesel particulate matter (DPM) and sulphuric acid mist. We focus on higher level controls with the view to eliminating, controlling or mitigating as close as possible to the hazard source.
Our medical surveillance programs help us identify health impacts at an early stage and provide information on the implementation and effectiveness of our exposure controls.
Examples of our initiatives can be found in our Sustainability Reports and on wemineforprogress.com.
