MMG believes that we must be a welcomed and valued member of the communities in which we operate and that we must consult with, listen and respond openly to our neighbours.
Through our stakeholder relations activities we aim to continually engage with all of our stakeholders, of which communities are a key component. In doing so, we also aim to be open, honest and as cooperative as possible when issues and concerns do arise.
Community consultation
MMG believes that it is important to have a sound understanding of the views, concerns and aspirations of the communities we are a part of. To this end we actively undertake community research at a number of our mine sites to help us understand communities’ and key stakeholders’ awareness and attitudes towards MMG and its operations.
As we grow and develop our business we intend extend our community engagement programs across as many of our sites as possible.
Community Programs
As part of its community engagement activities MMG seeks to implement community development programs in the areas in which it works. These are assessed on the basis of delivering maximum long-term benefit to our host communities and, the extent possible, are aligned with the wishes of these communities.
At Sepon, community development is managed through the Sepon Development Trust Fund and Business Development programs. The Sepon Trust Fund has a goal of building an economy for the local community that is not dependant on the Sepon Operations and which will continue to prosper well beyond eventual mine closure.
Our Century Mine operates under the Gulf Communities Agreement (GCA), a unique tripartite agreement between MMG, the Queensland Government and local Native Title groups. Under it we work closely with the Gulf communities to deliver social and economic benefits to the region including employment, education and training for local Aboriginal people. This unique, and landmark, agreement forms the foundation of a successful relationship between MMG and the local communities of the lower Gulf region.
At the Golden Grove Operation efforts are focused on sharing benefits of the mine with the wider mid-west region.
