Respecting cultural heritage through traditional ceremony at Kinsevere mine

Before starting mining at Nambulwa, a satellite deposit of our Kinsevere mine, we supported a traditional ceremony led by the Great Chief of Katete, conducted in strict accordance with ancestral protocols. By honouring this practice, we respect cultural heritage and strengthen trust with the local indigenous community.

The Katete community maintains deep cultural traditions connected to land, nature and ancestral spirits. According to custom, no disturbance of the earth can begin without a ceremonial blessing performed by the Great Chief.

In preparation for work at Nambulwa, the Great Chief formally notified us that a ceremony was required. Conducted privately and according to ancestral protocols, it could only be attended by authorised participants. We provided in-kind support as requested, without interfering in or modifying the ritual. Respecting this process supports harmony between people, land and industrial activity, and contributes to stable, trusted operations for MMG.

We took a culturally respectful and collaborative approach from the outset. Our Social Performance team engaged directly with the Great Chief to understand ceremonial requirements and timing, ensuring all protocols were observed. Cultural offerings were provided in alignment with local customs, and MMG representatives attended as observers only, allowing the community full ownership of the ritual.

The ceremony was completed successfully before mining commenced at Nambulwa, providing ancestral approval to begin operations. It strengthened trust and cooperation between MMG and the Katete leadership, reinforced respect for Indigenous cultural heritage and traditional authority, and was met with positive community sentiment. The project continued without objection or delay.

This experience reflects our broader commitment to recognising variations in Indigenous protocols between communities and treating traditional ceremonies as meaningful opportunities for transparent communication and relationship building, not simply as procedural steps.
