Environmental stewardship
Overview
MMG strives to protect communities and natural habitats by minimising our footprint and managing environmental impacts across the full life cycle of our mining operations. Environmental stewardship at MMG is guided by our Safety, Security, Health, Environment and Community (SSHEC) Policy and embedded within our Sustainability Framework, bringing consistency across sites while recognising that local context and risk profiles matter.
Our approach is practical and risk-based: we identify material environmental risks early, establish strong controls, monitor performance, and continuously improve through learning, science and operational experience.
We recognise that the natural environments in which we operate are closely connected to the identity, livelihoods and wellbeing of our host communities. Stewardship is therefore not only about compliance; it’s about care, trust and long-term outcomes. We work to prevent and reduce impacts, improve resource efficiency and strengthen resilience, while responding to evolving expectations related to climate change, biodiversity and water stewardship.
The focus areas under this pillar bring together the core elements of our environmental program. They cover how we act on climate change by reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency and strengthening climate resilience in planning and infrastructure, and how we manage environmental impacts across land, water, air, waste and rehabilitation. These focus areas also connect to our work on nature, including the development and implementation of MMG’s Nature Strategy and site-level assessments to better understand nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities.
Strong governance, transparent reporting and robust assurance underpin our environmental management. We maintain disciplined oversight for higher‑risk areas such as tailings and waste, aligning our practices with recognised international standards and strengthening controls, monitoring and accountability. Performance data and supporting context are disclosed through our Sustainability Databook and reporting suite.

Together, they show how we integrate environmental considerations into day‑to‑day decisions and long‑term mine design—so we can deliver responsible outcomes during operations and contribute to positive legacies beyond closure.
