MMG recognises that long-term business success is tied to the health of the natural environment. In 2025, our Rosebery site became the first in MMG to implement our Nature Strategy and complete a comprehensive LEAP assessment, evaluating how our operations interact with, and depend on, the natural world around them.
We launched the Nature Strategy in March 2025, marking a significant step in our environmental stewardship.
In 2024, MMG undertook a company-wide review of our nature-related obligations, aligning with international frameworks including the ICMM Nature Position Statement and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). That process made clear the need for a more structured, transparent approach to understanding our environmental footprint.
In response, we launched the Nature Strategy in March 2025. It integrates nature, climate resilience, community values and business performance, with priorities around enhancing biodiversity, strengthening climate resilience and supporting sustainable development across the value chain.
Central to the strategy is the Nature LEAP framework (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, Prepare), which helps identify and analyse nature-related issues and informs decision-making. Rosebery played a key role in establishing how this framework would be applied across the company.
Completing the LEAP assessment was a substantial collaborative effort. The Rosebery team worked alongside technical experts and external consultants to identify ecosystem interactions, assess impacts and dependencies, analyse risks and opportunities, and lay the groundwork for future nature-related reporting.
Between August and December 2025, the team held around 48 meetings and developed 28 technical worksheets that formed the backbone of the assessment. This was delivered by a small team managing the project alongside their day-to-day operational responsibilities.
Two stakeholder workshops brought together community groups, local and state government, special interest organisations and educational institutions. These sessions introduced the concepts behind nature-related risk and gave stakeholders a meaningful way to contribute their knowledge of local ecosystems and community priorities.
Rosebery has now finalised its LEAP assessment, establishing a consistent, transparent foundation for nature-related decision-making across MMG. One of the key outcomes from the LEAP assessment was the development of a Nature Action Plan, which has now been integrated into MMG Rosebery’s long- and short-term business planning. The work strengthens alignment with TNFD expectations and builds confidence among regulators, investors and community stakeholders.
While site-specific KPIs are still being developed, Rosebery has identified the kinds of metrics that will guide future assessments: habitat change, species impacts, freshwater efficiency, pollution reductions, capital allocated to nature-positive action and avoided costs from ecosystem services.
Rosebery’s work has also created a practical methodology that other MMG sites can now follow, positioning the company to adopt consistent measures that demonstrate real progress on nature-related resilience.
