Rosebery Mine achieves significant milestone

MMG’s Rosebery Mine is celebrating 90 years of continuous operation this year, marking a major milestone for one of Australia’s longest-running mines.

The Rosebery deposit was first discovered in 1893, with mining commencing shortly thereafter. Operations were periodically disrupted by economic downturns, including during the Great Depression.

Continuous operation began in February 1936 with the commissioning of the new Rosebery Mill, which has remained in operation ever since.

Rosebery Mine General Manager Steve Scott said the milestone reflects the dedication of generations of workers and the long-standing support of the local community.

“Rosebery has operated through significant change across the mining industry, and its longevity is a testament to the determination and commitment of the people who have worked here over nine decades,” Mr Scott said.

“We are proud of the contribution we continue to make to communities across the West Coast and more broadly across Tasmania, through our local supply chain, zinc concentrate supplied to Nyrstar, and royalties paid to the State Government.”

Long-serving employee Ian Pigden, who marked 55 years at Rosebery Mine earlier this month said he never imagined he’d still be here for such a significant milestone.

“This mine has been a huge part of my life. The people, the pride in the work we do, and the sense of community are what have kept generations coming back,” he said.

Rosebery currently has its largest-ever mineral resource, underpinning ambitious plans to drive the operation beyond 100 years of continuous mining.

“We sit on a world-class polymetallic resource, giving us confidence that Rosebery can continue operating well beyond a century,” Mr Scott said.

“Ongoing exploration success, combined with the experience of our workforce and a strong focus on innovation, positions Rosebery strongly for the decades ahead.”

A series of events will be held throughout the year to recognise the milestone, beginning with a celebration for the mine’s 650-strong workforce in February, followed by events with community members and stakeholders later in the year.

“This anniversary is about honouring our heritage while looking to the future, ensuring Rosebery continues to deliver economic benefits across Tasmania for generations to come,” Mr Scott said.
