Mining
Kinsevere operates a multi‑pit open‑pit mining complex designed to deliver safe, efficient and value‑optimised copper production. The Mining Operations and Technical Services teams work in close alignment, ensuring strong integration between mine design, planning and daily execution. This collaboration maintains consistent ore feed to the processing plant while effectively managing technical and operational risks across the site.
The operation extracts oxide and sulphide ores using conventional truck‑and‑shovel methods supported by an advanced fleet management system that enables real‑time monitoring and optimisation of material movement. Sequencing of multiple pits is strategically managed to balance ore quality, geotechnical conditions and haulage efficiency, ensuring stable, high‑performing mining activities throughout the year.
Technical Services provide the planning and governance backbone of the operation, integrating geological, geotechnical, hydrogeological and survey data into short‑, medium‑ and long‑term mine plans. Continuous reconciliation, dilution control and recovery optimisation reinforce operational discipline, while 24/7 geotechnical monitoring and robust water‑management practices ensure safe and reliable pit performance. This integrated approach underpins Kinsevere’s ability to deliver stable copper production and long‑term value within MMG’s global portfolio.
Processing
Kinsevere operates as an integrated copper – cobalt processing platform combining a modern concentrator plant and a state-of-the‑art RGA facility.
As part of the Kinsevere Expansion Project, the site now processes sulphide ore through crushing, grinding and flotation to produce high quality copper concentrate, while the RGA plant applies fluidised bed roasting to recover copper and cobalt and generate industrial-grade sulfuric acid for downstream leaching. This configuration strengthens Kinsevere’s overall processing capacity, supports long-term production targets of 80,000 tonnes of copper cathode per year and 4,000 – 6,000 tonnes of cobalt hydroxide per year, and positions the operation as a fully integrated asset within MMG’s global portfolio.
The concentrator plant delivers stable and efficient sulphide ore processing through an optimised flowsheet designed for consistent throughput and strong metallurgical performance. Its flotation and dewatering circuits ensure the production of high-quality copper concentrate, forming a critical input to Kinsevere’s downstream hydrometallurgical and roasting circuits.
The RGA facility enhances this platform by converting sulfurised concentrate into metal-rich roasted material while generating the sulfuric acid required for the site’s leaching operations. By integrating acid production with metal recovery, the plant supports operational reliability, resource efficiency and the long‑term sustainability of Kinsevere’s copper – cobalt production strategy.
Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF)
Kinsevere’s Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) play a central role in the safe, responsible and compliant management of tailings generated from hydrometallurgical copper processing. Designed and operated in alignment with internationally recognised standards, including the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), the TSFs form an essential part of the operation’s environmental stewardship and long‑term risk management commitments.
The facilities are engineered for long‑term containment and structural stability through compacted earth embankments built to stringent geotechnical specifications. Their design supports staged development over the life of mine and integrates a closed‑loop water management system that recovers process water, reduces freshwater consumption, and enhances overall operational efficiency.
A comprehensive governance framework underpins TSF performance, including continuous monitoring, structured inspections and independent technical reviews. Geotechnical and hydrogeological data are tracked in real time to guide decision‑making, supported by robust emergency preparedness measures and transparent engagement with stakeholders. This integrated approach safeguards people, protects the environment and reinforces Kinsevere’s commitment to responsible and sustainable tailings management.
Community engagement
Supporting local community development is a strategic priority for MMG Kinsevere, with teams actively involved in initiatives that stimulate local economies, strengthen social infrastructure, and deliver sustainable benefits to host communities.
Engagement with communities, government institutions and stakeholders ensures a clear understanding of local priorities and expectations, and all operations are carried out in strict compliance with DRC laws and regulations, with full respect for local customs and cultural values.
Kinsevere’s community investment framework is built on three complementary mechanisms:
- the statutory 0.3% endowment fund representing more than US$10 million invested directly in community projects;
- two Community Development Plans (Cahiers des Charges) amounting to US$6 million for Kinsevere and US$1.25 million for Sokoroshe II;
- mining royalty payments totalling approximately US$15 million between 2018 and 2024, when Bukanda was still administratively recognised as a sector before transitioning into the Chefferie de Kasongo.
Together, these mechanisms demonstrate a strong shared‑value approach and a long‑term commitment to responsible, transparent and community‑centred development.
Sustainability
MMG Limited’s Sustainability Reports provide a detailed view of Kinsevere’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance in the mining operation. These reports demonstrate a clear commitment to responsible mining, global standards and continuous improvement, providing stakeholders with transparent insights into the creation and long-term value of sustainable development.
The safe and responsible management of the Kinsevere tailings storage facility remains a strategic priority and a core component of the operation’s environmental stewardship commitments. This approach incorporates advances water recycling, renewable energy development, biodiversity conservation programs, Miombo woodland flora and wildlife protection (including snakes) and progressive land rehabilitation.
