Khoemacau
Overview
The Khoemacau copper mine is in the Kalahari Copper Belt, one of Africa’s most prospective mining regions, in the northwest district of Botswana. It has a workforce of over 2,200 on-site employees and contractors, 90% of which are Botswana citizens.
Khoemacau is a copper silver mine with an expected mine life of 20+ years. It operates under a strategic joint-venture structure where MMG holds a 55% controlling interest. MMG brings strong operational expertise, project management capability, and long-term strategic vision aligned with global copper demand.
Copper from Khoemacau is essential for global sectors such as electrification, renewable energy, EV manufacturing and construction, while silver strengthens the mine’s metal mix and export profile.
The annual production from the Zone 5 underground mine and Boseto processing plant is 43,000 to 53,000 tonnes of copper concentrate with the potential to achieve to 60,000 tonnes per annum. The mine produces silver as a valuable by-product, enhancing project revenue and reducing overall production costs.
Khoemacau completed the US$936 million Expansion Project Feasibility in 2025 which will see production increased from 60,000tpa to 130,000tpa copper metal in concentrate. In December 2025 the MMG Board approved the execution of the project with final commissioning planned for Q2 2028. During the construction and commissioning of the expansion project the Khoemacau workforce is expected to peak at 4,000+ employees and contractors, reverting to approximately 3,200 when it enters the production phase post 2028.
Community engagement
MMG Khoemacau places great importance on local community development initiatives and plays a key role in supporting local businesses, community events and social development projects.
The mine undertakes periodic social baseline studies to inform future social investment planning and participation in key stakeholder engagement activities and social development projects. We are committed to our involvement in initiatives that stimulate local economies and deliver sustainable benefits to host communities.
To facilitate our key stakeholder engagement activities, we routinely collaborate with local communities and organisations to:
- Provide updates on mining operations and elicit stakeholder feedback.
- Explore opportunities to advance community development initiatives which may include education programs, school refurbishments, water provision projects and waterborne sanitation systems.
Sustainability
The Khoemacau copper mine operates with a comprehensive range of sustainability initiatives focused on water recycling, renewable energy, energy and climate change action, mine closure planning and biodiversity conservation. These initiatives reflect MMG’s responsible resource management and long-term environmental stewardship aligned to SDGs and ICMM principles.
A comprehensive recycling programme at Boseto and Zone 5 targets multiple waste streams including plastic, paper, tin, and HDP pipes, all of which are segregated and recycled to minimise landfill usage and encourage material reuse.
Used oil is collected and responsibly managed through a partnership with Champs Botswana, where it is processed and re-refined into new oil products, diverting hazardous waste from the environment.
Scrap metal is systematically recovered and sent for recycling, supporting environmental stewardship and contributing to local value chains.
Both Boseto and Zone 5 prioritise the reuse of water resources across their operations. These recycling initiatives lower overall freshwater consumption, ease pressure on licenced boreholes, and minimise waste generation.
The Khoemacau mine’s commitment to renewable energy is evident through ongoing solar energy feasibility studies at both Boseto and Zone 5, while assessing the potential for large-scale implementation. MMG has developed strong foundations for long-term decarbonization through efficiency improvements, renewable energy resources and equipment electrification.
With respect to mine closure planning, MMG are committed to continuous land rehabilitation programmes. The Khoemacau mine rehabilitation strategies are aligned with international best practices, financial audits, and regulatory requirements. A focus on biodiversity conservation drove the development of a nature-positive strategy, enhancing local biodiversity against mining activities.
Along with annual tree planting and comprehensive plans to establish a dedicated game park, MMG Khoemacau mine initiatives are designed to promote ecological resilience and support conservation efforts in the region.
Processing methods and production capacity
The Boseto processing plant employs a conventional three‑stage crushing and sulphide flotation circuit, designed to treat bornite dominant ores. As mining progresses to greater depths, a portion of the plant tailings will be filtered and used for cemented paste backfill. Process plant design capacity is 3.65MTPa with a target copper output of 60,000 tonnes.
Safety
The Khoemacau mine is committed to embedding a “We Think Safety First” mindset across all levels of our organisation.
Our Safety & Health Strategy has been reviewed and realigned to support the emerging MMG SSHE Strategy 2030. This evolution marks a deliberate shift from a compliance-driven, activity-based approach to an integrated, risk-based and technology-enabled system that supports safe and reliable production.
We continue to achieve zero harm through:
- continuous improvement,
- disciplined execution of critical controls, and
- a proactive risk-aware culture.
Training and workplace development
The Khoemacau mine is committed to creating a workplace where employees are treated equitably, offering challenging and rewarding employment and professional development opportunities.
Our employees continue to attend a range of training programs spanning supervisory, leadership and management skill development, along with specialised training opportunities in mining, exploration, processing and engineering. The Khoemacau mine also delivers robust health and safety compliance programs to support the ongoing wellbeing of our people.
