Rosebery
Overview
Rosebery mine is one of Australia’s longest running mining operations located on the west coast of Tasmania, Australia.
The Rosebery mine produces zinc, copper and lead concentrates as well as gold and silver. Rosebery is 100% owned and operated by MMG Limited and employs more than 700 permanent employees and contractors.
It is an underground polymetallic base metal mine with one of the largest polymetallic ore bodies of its kind in the world, with the potential to extend the mine life beyond 100 years of continuous operation. The underground mine reaches depths of more than 1.5 kilometres from the surface.
Rosebery’s ore is mined mechanically and hauled to the surface for onsite processing. Parts of the processing plant are automated and can be controlled remotely, ensuring safe and consistent operation. Concentrate is transported by rail to the Port of Burnie and shipped to Nystrar smelters in Hobart and Port Pirie.
Annual zinc production at the Rosebery mine is 45,000 – 55,000 tonnes.
In 2025, Rosebery was the first mine in Tasmania to introduce a battery-electric production drill, marking another step in decarbonising its mining operations.
Community engagement
Rosebery mine has been at the heart of the Rosebery community since 1936, supporting the region through employment.
The operation is a trusted community partner prioritising support for Tasmanian businesses through local supply chains. Rosebery mine employees actively participate in local events to boost spending and deliver economic benefit to the local community.
MMG Rosebery collaborates closely with the local community to deliver sustainable programs that address local priorities through targeted sponsorship and skills development initiatives. These programs are supported by strong partnerships and established community networks, ensuring long-term impact and shared value.
The Rosebery mine engages openly with community members, local groups and councils to understand local priorities and support meaningful outcomes. Through sponsorships, grants and partnerships, MMG Rosebery helps strengthen education, wellbeing, cultural connection and community resilience, ensuring lasting value for the region.
Sustainability
MMG Limited’s Sustainability Reports provide a detailed view of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance in the Rosebery mining operation. These reports reflect MMG’s commitment to responsible mining, global standards and continuous improvement, offering stakeholders clear insights into how long-term value is created while supporting sustainable development.
As part of MMG’s vision to be a leading international mining company for a low-carbon future, a significant investment has been made in low emission underground vehicles and a production drill at the Rosebery mine. Rosebery was the first mine in Tasmania to introduce the battery-electric production drill in an effort to decarbonise mining operations, while transitioning to diesel electric loaders began in 2023, leading to a reduction in emissions, fuel use and heat generation.
The Rosebery mine remains committed to a low-carbon future and provides sponsorship within the Braddon district in consultation with the Rosebery Community Consultative Committee. This funding is based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 1-6 +8 and MMG Rosebery Values.
