New apprentices on the job at Rosebery Mine

MMG’s Rosebery Mine is future proofing its workforce to prepare for new and emerging technologies.

Faith Coulson, Matthew Phillips and Xander Scott have recently started their 4-year electrotechnology apprenticeship.

The trio will work a 7/7 roster while studying their Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician at TAFE.

MMG Rosebery Mine General Manager Steve Scott said they will be an asset to the team.

“As we begin seeing moves to mining electrification and a shift to clean energy transformation, we are building capability within our team to prepare for the skills required to conduct repairs on modern technology.

“We are excited to have Faith, Matt and Xander onboard and support them to develop their trade,” Mr Scott said.

Ms Coulson has taken on an apprenticeship after completing her cadetship last year while Mr Phillips is a former world champion dirt bike rider who has worked underground and on the surface before becoming an apprentice.

Ms Coulson said she is ready for the challenge after finishing her cadetship last year.

“It’s exciting to see what technology is possible for an older mine site like Rosebery, as we move into the era of electrification,” she said.

Mr Phillips said he spent ten years in Europe dirt bike racing before joining the Rosebery team working underground and then in the mill, before applying for the apprenticeship.

“From being around all the trades, I decided this would be the one I’d set out to do if I had the opportunity because I think you can make a long career out of it,” he said.

“Rosebery mine is a good place to work, the culture’s great and everyone follows our values and takes safety seriously because you want to go home.

As part of its aspirations to decarbonise its operations, late last year MMG Rosebery added new hybrid loaders to its vehicle fleet. The vehicles will help reduce the mine’s carbon footprint.

MMG Rosebery provides employment opportunities through cadetships, apprenticeships, graduate and vacation student programs. Job opportunities can be found at www.mmg.com/careers/.
