MMG Rosebery cuts first portal in three decades

MMG Rosebery has reached a significant milestone, cutting a new portal for the first time in 30 years, as part of a project to extend the mine’s operational life.

The Tom McDonald Exploration Portal – named after the prospector who discovered the Rosebery orebody in 1893 – will enable underground diamond drilling in a historic section of the site, first mined between 1890 and 1915. The portal will provide access to a highly prospective but largely underexplored resource that cannot be explored from the surface.

Rosebery Mine General Manager Steve Scott said the multi-million-dollar investment, made in the operation’s 90th year, marks another step toward securing the mine’s future beyond 100 years of continuous operation.

“This portal will give our exploration team access to a promising resource area,” he said.

“It will also improve our understanding of the deposit while supporting local employment on the west coast.”

The project is expected to deliver around 1000 metres of underground development in 2026, create dozens of jobs and drive further investment in the regional supply chain. It is being delivered in partnership with underground mining contractor PYBAR.

PYBAR General Manager James Glover said PYBAR is proud to partner with MMG to develop the Tom McDonald Exploration Decline.

“To think that Rosebery has been in continuous operation for over 90 years and is now embarking on future growth which includes the development of the Tom McDonald Decline is fantastic for both MMG and the local community.

“Further investment in the Rosebery asset creates job security, employment opportunities, and local spend within Rosebery and broader West Coast region,” Mr Glover said.
