Miners raise $5,000 for HeartKids
Miners at MMG Century mine in remote north west Queensland have shown that distance is no barrier to raising money for a good cause, with employees at the site raising more than $5,000 for the charity HeartKids.
HeartKids provides support to the more than 2000 children diagnosed with heart conditions and their families each year.
The mine, which raises funds for a variety of charities throughout the year, held a series of events for HeartKids during August and September including a walkathon where miners were sponsored to walk or run around a heart-shaped track. The events culminated in a Managers Auction in early September, which saw departments bid to purchase members of Century’s management team for the day who would also have to turn up to breakfast the following morning in full fancy dress costume.
Century General Manager John Lamb said that workers at the mine were inspired to fundraise for HeartKids after hearing about his own daughter’s experiences with a heart condition.
“Our team at Century were incredibly supportive when my own daughter underwent surgery for a heart condition earlier this year and wanted to know how they could help other children and their families in the same situation.
“We decided that the best way we could do this was to fundraise for an organisation that provides support to families during these difficult times.
“People at the mine really got behind our fundraising activities. The Managers Auction turned out to be the biggest hit, which I think was the result of people looking forward to seeing the managers in their costumes. Teams were also able to select other tasks for the managers they had purchased to perform.”
Mr Lamb said that he was proud to be part of such a generous and supportive team.
“In addition to our activities for HeartKids, our team has already raised money for the Victorian bushfire victims and Cancer Council this year. Individual teams on site have also raised money for local schools and other programs for children in the Gulf.”
