Dugald River
Overview
Dugald River is one of the world’s top 10 zinc mine operations, located 65 kilometres north of Cloncurry in Queensland, Australia.
The Dugald River operation is 100% owned by MMG Limited and has a workforce of over 850 employees, producing zinc and lead concentrate. Dugald River is the first underground mine that MMG has taken from pre-feasibility to production, with an estimated mine life of more than 20 years.
Ore is mined underground using diamond drilling techniques, extracted to the surface and treated onsite. The processing plant operates with minimal operational input, supporting safe, efficient and consistent production. Concentrate is trucked and then taken by rail to the Port of Townsville (770km), where containers are unloaded and then shipped overseas.
As part of our commitment to a low-carbon future, in April 2023 the Dugald River Solar Farm began operations, supplying a third of the mine’s power, and reducing emissions by 33%.
Community engagement
Supporting local business is a key priority for the Dugald River mine, with MMG staff participating in key events to boost spending and deliver economic benefits to the local communities. From exploration through to closure, the Company talks with Dugald River communities, governments, and stakeholders to understand their priorities and concerns. MMG operates in accordance with the Dugald River Stakeholder Engagement Plan which determines how the Company communicates, gathers feedback, and responds to issues.
The Dugald River mining operation is an active and trusted community partner. MMG engage openly with community members, Traditional Owners, local groups and councils to understand local priorities and support meaningful outcomes. Through sponsorships, grants and local partnerships, MMG helps strengthen education, wellbeing, cultural connection and community resilience, ensuring lasting value is delivered to the region.
Sustainability
MMG Limited’s Sustainability Reports provide a detailed view of the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance in the Dugald River mining operation. These reports reflect MMG’s commitment to responsible mining, global standards and continuous improvement, offering stakeholders clear insights into how the Company creates long-term value while supporting sustainable development.
The safe and responsible management of the Dugald River tailings storage facility is a critical priority and a core component of environmental and social risk management strategies. The facility has a capacity of 13 million cubic metres that will support 25 years of mine production, utilising a natural valley to create a safe and environmentally friendly mining solution.
As part of MMG’s ongoing commitment to a low-carbon future, in April 2023 the Dugald River Solar Farm began operations, supplying a third of the mine’s power and reducing emissions by 33%.
