Students undertaking their university studies can gain practical experience in the mining industry as part of MMG Rosebery’s Vacation Program.
Five positions are being offered across areas including Mining Engineering, Metallurgy, Geology, Geotechnical/Civil Engineering, Surveying, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
The paid vacation program runs for 10-12 weeks across the Australian university summer holiday period.
Hamish Douglas joined Rosebery Mine as a vacation student late last year, while studying Mechanical Engineering with a major in mining, at the University of Queensland.
He said the program has provided him with valuable hands-on and real-life experience in the mining industry.
“MMG’s Vacation Program has enabled me to do drill and blast design and provides a realistic taste of what I will be doing when I complete my studies. It’s rewarding to do work that is impactful and makes a difference.”
Hamish has since been offered a role in the 2026 MMG Graduate Program as a Graduate Mining Engineer.
“The Vacation Program has laid the groundwork for me to hit the ground running when I begin the two-year graduate program next year.”
Hamish moved from Brisbane to take up the opportunity at Rosebery Mine due to its mountainous scenery and the historical significance of the operation.
“I wanted to try something new, and I had never been to Tasmania before, so it thought spending 3-months in Rosebery would be a great opportunity.
“I have really enjoyed the people I work with and the workplace culture, it’s what attracted me to accept the Graduate role,” Hamish said.
Rosebery Mine General Manager Steve Scott said vacation students get on-the-job experience in the mining industry.
“The Vacation Program may provide a direct pathway into MMG Rosebery’s Graduate Program and a long-term career in the mining industry.
“We have a great workplace culture at Rosebery Mine and are always looking for new talent to take our operation well beyond 100 years of continuous operation,” he said.
To be eligible for the Vacation Program you need to be currently enrolled and undertaking study in a recognised Australian university bachelors or post graduate degree.
