Dugald River is 100% owned by the MMG Limited and is one of the world’s top 10 zinc operations.

Due to the scale of the ore body, Dugald River is estimated to have a mine life of 20+ years to process an average of 1.7 million tonnes of ore per annum. The operation predominantly produces zinc concentrate, with by-products including lead and silver.

Dugald River ore is mined underground using diamond drilling techniques, after which it is extracted to the surface and treated on-site. Concentrate is then transported to the Port of Townsville via rail departing from Cloncurry.

The successful commissioning of the Dugald River project was achieved ahead of schedule and under budget, with the first production of finished zinc concentrate leaving Dugald River on 8 November 2017. Dugald River is expected to produce around 175,000 – 190,000 tonnes of zinc in zinc concentrate annually.

More information about our ore reserves can be found in our Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves report, and in our Quarterly Production Reports.

The operation employs around 500 employees and contractors on a mix of fly-in, fly-out and local residential basis. Around 90% of the employees on site are Australian nationals.

Community Engagement

MMG Dugald River operates a modest grants and sponsorship program, with 2 rounds available per year. These rounds occur in March, and again in September.

Only programs benefitting the communities neighbouring the MMG Dugald River Mine are considered – being Cloncurry and Mount Isa.
