Kinsevere congratulates students at new Kasenga Technical University

MMG Kinsevere has congratulated students following their commencement at the Kasenga Technical University (UKAM), a new tertiary education facility in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), last week.

The university, located approximately 185 kilometres from Lubumbashi, opened to students on Thursday 15 October. UKAM will initially provide students from across the region with access to tertiary education in agronomy and engineering with the potential to expand course offerings in the future.

Kinsevere General Manager, Miles Naude, said that he was pleased that MMG was able to contribute to the DRC’s newest tertiary education facility.

“UKAM will provide students with access to further education in two of the country’s most important industries – mining and agriculture,” he said.

“This is critical to the ongoing socio-economic development of the region and MMG was pleased to furnish 10 classrooms, meeting the needs of up to 1250 students, as well as administrative buildings at the university.

“We understand that hundreds of students have already enrolled at UKAM and we wish these and future students all the best with their studies,” he said.

MMG also partners with the University of Lubumbashi on a bursary program for students in mining-related fields. 20 students received bursaries from MMG in 2014, with beneficiaries of the 2015 bursary program to be announced shortly.

MMG commenced operations in the DRC in 2012 with the acquisition of Kinsevere, a copper mine located approximately 45 kilometres from Lubumbashi. The mine employs approximately 2000 employees and contractors, of which approximately 94% are Congolese nationals.

MMG is a global resources company which explores, develops and mines base metals deposits around the world. Headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, MMG is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
