MMG Rosebery mines rescue first again

MMG Rosebery has won the Tasmanian Emergency Rescue Competition for the third time in four years.

Held at Vedanta Copper Mines of Tasmania at Mt Lyell on Friday 12 to Saturday 13 November, the MMG Rosebery Mines Rescue Team delivered a superb performance, securing the overall championship, ahead of Grange Resources and Cornwall Coal.

Led by Elmar Van Breda, the team produced excellent results and placed first in six out of the nine categories:

  • Safety;
  • First Aid;
  • Team Skills;
  • Confined Space;
  • Vehicle Extraction; and
  • Underground Rescue.

Captain Elmar van Breda’s strong leadership also secured him the Captain’s Award.

For the first time, this year’s competition was run under the auspices of the Tasmanian Mineral Council’s Emergency Response Competition.

The competition’s new format meant that teams were judged on real life scenarios rather than being assessed on equipment checks. It also allowed for non mining organisations to compete.

MMG Rosebery General Manager and Chair of the Tasmanian Minerals Emergency Response Committee John Lamb said he was very proud of the entire competition, and of the Rosebery team’s performance.

“The MMG Rosebery Mines Rescue Team undertakes significant training throughout the year and this year’s results are a testament to the skill and discipline of the team,” he said.

“We place strong emphasis on health and safety at MMG Rosebery and competitions such as these provide us with an opportunity to put our abilities to the test, and seek continuous improvement,” said Mr Lamb.

MMG Rosebery’s team comprised Elmar Van Breda (Captain), Graham Cowan, Marcus Cook, Adam Reeve, Robert Button, Douglas Ralph and Mark Gottliebsen.
