MMG Limited (MMG) welcomes the decision by the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment to determine that its referral under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC Act) of design and assessment works for the proposed South Marionoak Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is not a controlled action, subject to MMG complying with certain conditions.
This means that no approval is required for these works under the EPBC Act. MMG now has permission to undertake the necessary works to inform the design for the TSF that is critical to securing the future for the MMG Rosebery mine.
Over the past year MMG Rosebery has worked in consultation with the Department, the Tasmanian Government and our local community to ensure the project meets all regulatory, environmental and community expectations.
Rosebery mine’s General Manager Steve Scott advised that while the team is still working through the detailed project schedule, the plan is to commence the approved works by the end of January.
“We are pleased with the clarity provided by the Department. We remain committed to complying with all necessary requirements and will ensure appropriate environmental protections are in place.”
“We will continue to work with regulators and community stakeholders throughout the process with the aim of securing a strong future for Rosebery mine, and the many local jobs that depend on it.”
