Waanyi ReGen awarded Century contract

Waanyi ReGen (WRJV), a 50:50 joint venture between the Waanyi Prescribed Body Corporate (Waanyi PBC) and ReGen, a Downer Mining enterprise, has been awarded a Labour Hire contract for care and maintenance activities at MMG’s Century Mine.

The three year contract covers water and land management and erosion prevention activities at the Century mine site. The Century mining operation entered care and maintenance in February this year following final processing at the Lawn Hill mine and processing operation.

The Waanyi People are the Traditional Owners and Native Title holders of the lands on which the Lawn Hill mine and processing site is located. Over the mine life of Century approximately 1,000 Indigenous employees worked at the site and this agreement ensures that Traditional Owners continue to benefit from economic opportunities associated with the mine.

MMG CEO Andrew Michelmore said the Company was pleased to extend its longstanding partnership with the Waanyi People into the next phase of Century mine’s life.

“Our objective has always been to create a lasting positive legacy and this commitment endures during this next phase in Century’s life. The award of the contract to the Waanyi ReGen further reinforces our support for the Waanyi People and the Waanyi PBC,” he said.

The Waanyi ReGen joint venture is chaired by Independent Chair, Nyunggai Warren Mundine AO and a Board which includes two members each representing the Waanyi PBC and ReGen.

Mr. Mundine AO said the contract was incredible news for the WRJV.

“The joint venture between Waanyi PBC and ReGen was born out of the vision and desire to do good.” Mr Mundine AO said.

“Restoring and healing country physically and spiritually through a commercially operated business that will lead to economic activity. This will create jobs, build businesses and grow the socio-economic future of the Waanyi people.”

“MMG wants to leave a lasting legacy and saw the opportunity for good presented by the WRJV. I wish to thank MMG and Andrew Michelmore for helping to share in the vision and to turn the desire into reality,” he said.

WRJV’s work at Century will commence before the end of the month.
