Zinc stockpile and emissions reducing at Century port facility

This follows an update last week that MMG made to the Karumba community of sulphur dioxide emissions from its concentrate shed. These emissions were being created by the large volume of concentrate then stored in the shed that had built up while the MV Wunma transfer vessel underwent dry docking. 

During this period a smaller vessel was used to transfer concentrate from the Karumba port facility to export ships in the Gulf. This was exacerbated by recent technical issues with the reclaimer inside the storage shed, the equipment used to move concentrate onto the conveyor to load the vessel.

“We are pleased to have been able to get the reclaimer operating on Friday night and over the weekend start to make an impact on the amount of concentrate in the shed,” said MMG Century General Manager Mr John Lamb.

While the emissions are occurring inside the shed, monitoring results have indicated some low level fluctuation in sulphur dioxide outside the shed.

“We have increased monitoring to four times a day at 15 locations around the Karumba community to ensure we can pick up any fluctuations in the levels and continue to keep the community informed,” said John.

“We take our obligations to the community very seriously and over the weekend I personally met with residents in Karumba to respond to their questions or concerns.”

Failure of the reclaimer caused some delay to Century’s loading program last week, however it is now successfully and continuously loading. MMG is discussing the impact on its shipping schedule directly with its customers and will continue to keep them informed of progress through the coming days.
