Noise and Vibration Management

MMG is committed to managing noise and vibration impacts responsibly across all operations to protect the health and wellbeing of our workforce, local communities, and surrounding ecosystems.

Identification and Monitoring

We proactively identify the primary sources of noise and vibration associated with our activities, including:

  • Blasting and drilling operations
  • Ore handling and processing
  • Heavy vehicle movement and haulage
  • Construction and infrastructure development

Each site maintains a Noise and Vibration Management Plan, which includes:

  • Baseline noise and vibration assessments
  • Real-time and periodic monitoring
  • Predictive modelling for new projects or expansions
  • Management and mitigation measures

In 2024, MMG conducted updated noise and vibration assessments at Las Bambas, Kinsevere, Rosebery and Dugald River, using both fixed and mobile monitoring stations.

Impact Assessment and Controls

We assess the potential impacts of noise and vibration on:

  • MMG People*: Occupational exposure and hearing protection
  • Local communities: Residential amenity and cultural sites
  • Environment: Wildlife disturbance and ecosystem health

Control measures implemented include:

  • Acoustic enclosures and barriers
  • Blasting time restrictions and vibration limits
  • Low-noise equipment procurement
  • Community notification protocols for high-impact activities

In 2024, MMG recorded:

  • Zero exceedances of regulatory noise limits at monitored community boundaries
  • >95% compliance with internal vibration thresholds
  • No noise-related grievances escalated beyond site level

Health Surveillance and Worker Safety

MMG conducts regular audiometric testing for employees exposed to occupational noise and provides mandatory hearing protection and training. In 2024, no cases of work-related hearing loss were reported across MMG sites.

Community Engagement and Transparency

We engage with local communities and other rightsholders to understand their concerns and expectations regarding noise and vibration. This includes:

  • Community consultation during Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs)
  • Public disclosure of monitoring results
  • Grievance mechanisms for reporting and resolving concerns

In 2024, MMG held over 40 community meetings that included noise and vibration topics and updated its stakeholder engagement protocols to include culturally sensitive communication around blasting schedules.

Integration with Closure and Land Use Planning

Noise and vibration considerations are integrated into:

  • Mine closure planning, to ensure long-term land use compatibility
  • Biodiversity and cultural heritage management, particularly where sensitive receptors are present

These efforts support MMG’s alignment with the ICMM Socio-Economic Reporting Framework and IFRS S1 by addressing both physical and transition risks related to operational impacts.

Governance and Assurance

Noise and vibration management is overseen by site-level SSHE teams and reviewed quarterly by the Executive Committee. Performance data is included in MMG’s Sustainability Report and ESG Databook, and selected indicators are subject to external assurance under ISAE 3000. Our approach is embedded in our SSHE Performance Standard and aligned with global frameworks including GRI 403 (Occupational Health and Safety), GRI 413 (Local Communities), HKEX ESG Code, and the ICMM Performance Expectations.
