Safety

Safety is MMG’s first value and a foundational element of our operational culture. We are committed to eliminating fatalities and serious injuries, reducing high-potential incidents, and fostering a proactive safety culture across all sites. Our approach is embedded in our Safety, Security, Health, Environment and Community (SSHEC) Policy, as well as our Safety, Significant Events and Security, Health and Environment (SSHE) Performance Standard, and Risk Management Standard.

Governance and Culture

Safety governance is overseen by the Executive Committee and the Governance, Remuneration, Nomination and Sustainability (GRNS) Committee. Our safety culture is built on four pillars:

  • Leadership and culture aligned to MMG’s leadership attributes
  • Elimination of fatalities through critical control management
  • Prevention of injuries via safe task execution and hazard identification
  • Application of learnings from incidents and significant events

Safety performance is reviewed quarterly and integrated into executive scorecards.

Leading Indicators and Performance Goals

At MMG, safety is our first value and a cornerstone of our operational culture. We take a proactive, data-driven approach to safety, focusing on leading indicators that help prevent incidents before they occur. Our goal is to continuously strengthen our safety culture and reduce risk across all sites.

TRIF targets are determined at the operational level following discussions with each site, with improvement percentages calculated based on the previous year’s performance.

Key Safety Initiatives in 2024

  • Field Task Observations (FTOs)
Over 10,000 FTOs were conducted to identify unsafe conditions and behaviours, reinforce safe practices, and engage frontline workers in continuous improvement.
  • Critical Control Verification
Systematic checks were expanded to ensure critical controls for fatal risk scenarios—such as working at height, vehicle operation, and hazardous materials—are in place and effective.
  • Safety Training and Inductions
100% of employees and contractors received role-specific safety training, covering hazard identification, permit-to-work systems, and emergency response protocols.
  • Safety Culture Programs
Leadership and behavioural safety programs were implemented to foster a culture of care, accountability, and intervention. Employees are empowered to stop work if safety is compromised.
  • Incident and Event Management (IEM)
A centralised system is used to report and investigate incidents, near misses, and high-potential events. Learnings are shared across the business to prevent recurrence.
  • Emergency Preparedness Drills
Site-specific emergency response exercises were conducted, involving employees, contractors, and local stakeholders to test readiness and improve coordination.

Performance Highlights – 2024

  • Zero fatalities recorded
  • TRIFR: 2.06 per million person-hours
  • LTIFR: 0.72 per million person-hours
  • 10,000+ Field Task Observations conducted
  • 100% safety training coverage for employees and contractors

Safety performance is reviewed quarterly by the Executive Committee and the Governance, Remuneration, Nomination and Sustainability (GRNS) Committee, ensuring continuous oversight and improvement.

Safe Task Management

Our SSHE Performance Standard defines the requirements for conducting work safely. Key elements include:

  • Task Hazard Analysis (THA) and Field Task Observations (FTO)
  • Permit-to-work systems and isolation protocols
  • Culturally appropriate induction and training
  • Mental health and wellbeing programs
  • Fatigue management and psychological safety initiatives

Employees are empowered to stop work if safety is compromised and to intervene to protect others or the environment.

Contractor Safety Management

MMG applies the same safety standards to contractors as to employees. This includes:

  • Prequalification and onboarding safety assessments
  • Contractor-specific training and supervision
  • Inclusion in incident reporting and performance reviews

Contractor safety performance is tracked separately and disclosed in our ESG Databook.

Fatal Risk Management

MMG’s Fatal Risk Standard identifies 12 critical risks across our operations, including:

  1. Aviation – Risks associated with chartered and commercial flight operations, including airfield and helipad safety.
  2. Carcinogens – Exposure to cancer-causing substances, including airborne particulates and hazardous chemicals.
  3. Clearance to Work, Isolations and Permits – Risks from uncontrolled energy sources and hazardous tasks without proper authorisation.
  4. Explosives and Blasting – Handling, storage, and use of explosives in mining operations.
  5. Ground Control – Risks from unstable ground conditions, including rockfalls and collapses.
  6. Guarding – Inadequate physical barriers or machine guarding that could lead to entrapment or injury.
  7. Hazardous Materials – Handling and exposure to toxic, flammable, or reactive substances.
  8. Land Transport of People – Vehicle-related risks including fatigue, collisions, and poor road conditions.
  9. Lifting Operations – Risks from crane use, rigging failures, and dropped loads.
  10. Lightning – Exposure to lightning strikes, particularly in open-pit and elevated work areas.
  11. Mobile Equipment – Operation of heavy machinery and vehicles, including interactions with pedestrians.
  12. Working at Heights – Falls from elevated platforms, ladders, or structures.

These risks are managed through MMG’s Risk Management System and site-specific procedures, with critical controls defined for each category.

Site-specific fatal and material risks are managed using our Risk Management System, with controls verified through audits and incident reviews. Learnings from significant events are shared across the business to prevent recurrence.

Incident Reporting and Investigation

MMG uses the Incident and Event Management (IEM) system to report, investigate, and analyse:

  • Incidents and near misses
  • High-risk hazards
  • Legal non-compliances
  • Inspections and audits

Investigations are led by cross-functional teams and focus on root cause analysis and critical control effectiveness. Learnings are disseminated through MMG-wide safety alerts and forums.

Emergency and Crisis Management

Each site maintains a site-specific Emergency Management Plan, which includes:

  • Protocols for material risk events and infrastructure failure
  • Regular drills and continuous improvement reviews
  • Engagement with local stakeholders and emergency services

In 2024, MMG conducted emergency response exercises at Las Bambas and Kinsevere, involving over 300 participants, including community members and first responders. Escalated events activate the Crisis Management Team (CMT), supported by the Executive Committee.

Security and Human Rights

MMG’s Security Management Plans are based on site-specific risks and aligned with:

  • Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR)
  • International Code of Conduct Association (ICoCA) for Private Security Providers

All contracted security providers are required to be signatories, or agree in writing to comply with these frameworks.

SSHE Reporting and Data Management

At MMG, the systematic recording and maintenance of Safety, Security, Health, and Environment (SSHE) data is essential to our operational integrity and continuous improvement. SSHE data is captured across all assets and functions to:

  • Meet internal governance and external regulatory obligations
  • Evaluate safety performance and identify trends
  • Support transparent reporting to stakeholders
  • Enable data-driven decision-making and risk mitigation

Our Incident and Event Management (IEM) system serves as the central platform for capturing incidents, near misses, inspections, and audit findings. This data is regularly reviewed by site leadership and corporate teams to ensure compliance, assess the effectiveness of critical controls, and drive targeted safety initiatives.

Assurance and Transparency

SSHE data also informs our quarterly performance reviews, executive scorecards, and external disclosures, including our Sustainability Report and ESG Databook. Selected safety data is externally assured under AA1000 (AccountAbility Assurance Standard), reinforcing our commitment to transparency and accountability.

Our external disclosure and transparency is aligned with global frameworks including GRI 403 (Occupational Health and Safety), HKEX ESG Code, ICMM Performance Expectations, and IFRS S1/S2.
