Tyrone Hookey is a young man who loves trucks. The 29-year-old who left school at 15 so he could be around trucks is now celebrating his first year as a contract partner with MMG’s Century Mine at Lawn Hill.
The success of Hookey Logistics is an example of MMG Century’s commitment to foster indigenous businesses that will continue long after MMG’s mining, processing and shipping operations have finished at Lawn Hill and Karumba. The company employs four people and has an initial fleet of two trucks.
Tyrone, who is a Mount Isa local and member of the Waanyi Native Title Group, says his parents Reg and Mandy have been his role models with their own success in civil earthworks.
“My mum and dad have shown the rest of the family that you can succeed if you really want to, and that success comes with taking risks and standing on your own two feet,” says Tyrone.
“In future, I want to use my start as a small business operator to explore Joint Venture opportunities with other logistics businesses.
“This will allow me expand my skills and to learn more about other companies operating systems and processes,” says Tyrone.
Hookey Logistics celebrated its one-year milestone with MMG Century at a presentation hosted onsite at Lawn Hill by MMG Queensland Operations Commercial Manager Julie Hilder.
