Health

At MMG, protecting the health and wellbeing of our people is as vital as ensuring their physical safety. Our health management approach is embedded in our SSHEC Policy, Significant Events and Safety, Security, Health and Environment (SSHE) Performance Standard, and Fatal Risk Standard.

Governance and Strategy

Health governance is overseen by the Executive Committee and the Governance, Remuneration, Nomination and Sustainability (GRNS) Committee. Each site maintains:

  • A site-specific Health Risk Assessment (HRA)
  • A Health Surveillance Monitoring Plan
  • An Occupational Hygiene Monitoring Strategy

These are reviewed annually and updated based on exposure data, regulatory changes, and operational risks.

Occupational Health and Exposure Management

MMG identifies and manages health risks using Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) and internationally recognised standards. Key elements include:

  • Annual exposure assessments and SEG (Similar Exposure Group) reviews
  • Respiratory health surveillance (e.g. chest X-rays, spirometry, HRCT scans)
  • Monitoring of carcinogens and airborne contaminants

In 2024:

  • 100% of workers in high-risk roles underwent health surveillance
  • Zero occupational illnesses were recorded across MMG operations

Examples of exposure controls:

  • Sulphuric Acid Mist: Polypropylene balls in chemical tanks
  • Diesel Particulate Matter: Low-sulphur fuels and exhaust filtration
  • Respirable Crystalline Silica: Dust suppression, enclosed cabins, ventilation
  • Welding Fumes: Extraction systems and mandatory PPE
  • Lead Exposure: Surface and atmospheric testing, strict hygiene protocols

At Rosebery and Dugald River, MMG complies with the NOHSC National Standard and Code of Practice for Inorganic Lead, with ongoing blood lead monitoring and adaptive work practices.

Endemic Disease and Pandemic Preparedness

MMG maintains Exposure Management Plans for endemic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and typhoid. At Kinsevere, malaria remains a key health priority. On-site medics are available at high-risk locations.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

At MMG, we acknowledge the challenges that site employment can present to our workforce, and we are committed to supporting our people’s psycho-social health both on and off shift. Our Mental Health Framework supports employees through:

  1. Awareness and Prevention: Mental health campaigns and training
  2. Capacity Building: Resilience training and wellbeing resources
  3. Support and Recovery: Access to site health teams and Employee Assistance Program services. At MMG, EAP services typically include:
    • 24/7 emergency counselling support
    • Wellbeing coaching
    • Legal and financial advice
    • Family support services
    • Access to on-site or virtual psychologists or counsellors
    • Mental health check-ins and resilience training

In 2024, the following achievements were reported:

  • Mental Health Risk Assessments: All MMG sites implemented formal mental health risk assessments to identify psychosocial hazards and guide local wellbeing strategies.
  • Mental Health First Aid Training: Delivered at Rosebery and Kinsevere, this training equipped employees with tools to recognise and respond to mental health challenges among peers.
  • Site-Level Sustainability Workshops: These included modules on mental health and wellbeing, enhancing local capacity to manage psychosocial risks and promote a culture of care.
  • Integration into Safety Culture: Mental health was embedded into MMG’s broader safety mindset, supported by leadership behaviours and workplace processes that prioritise both physical and psychological wellbeing.

Fit for Work and Fatigue Management

MMG ensures all personnel are fit for work through:

  • Fatigue monitoring technology in high-risk roles
  • Random drug and alcohol testing
  • Self-reporting protocols for mental or physical health changes

Injury Management and Rehabilitation

MMG supports early and safe return to work through:

  • Workplace rehabilitation programs
  • Suitable duties during recovery
  • Medical case management and supervisor training

In 2024:

  • 56% of injured employees returned to work within 30 days
  • Zero long-term disability cases were recorded

Contractor Health Management

MMG applies the same health standards to contractors as to employees. This includes:

  • Inclusion in health surveillance programs
  • Access to mental health and wellbeing services
  • Contractor-specific health performance tracking

Community Health Engagement

MMG supports community health through:

  • Local health partnerships and clinics
  • Health impact assessments (HIAs) for new projects
  • Disease prevention programs in host communities

Performance and Assurance

Health performance is tracked through our Sustainability Report and ESG Databook. Selected health data is externally assured under ISAE 3000. Our external reporting and conformance is aligned with global frameworks including GRI 403 (Occupational Health and Safety), HKEX ESG Code, ICMM Performance Expectations, and IFRS S1/S2.
